Alpana Sharma was born and raised in New Delhi, North India, in a strict vegetarian Hindu family. Her love of cooking began at the age of 9 and was nurtured by her mother and grandmother. Cooking family recipes that were handed down by word of mouth, she grew to enjoy blending regional influences and regional Indian spices to create multi-layered aromatic dishes for family and friends. Alpana moved to the United States for her higher education in the 1980s. Finding her dietary restrictions severely limited, she fell off the vegetarian wagon when her mother, concerned for her health, wrote to her and gave her permission to eat meat. Alpana now works at Wright State University, where she chairs the School of Humanities and teaches literature. Her meat-eating days long behind her, Alpana has returned to her childhood love of vegetarian cooking. She now enjoys incorporating Western influences in her cooking and particularly loves cooking with organic produce that is in season.
