American Cheeses

America, being the melting pot of the world, provides cheeses that are an amalgam of other countries’ cheeses. A few exceptions to this rule occur with Jack cheese originating in California, and Brick and Colby coming from Wisconsin. The U.S. is best known, unfortunately, for our highly processed, plastic-wrapped American cheese slices. Dorothy Lane Market is pleased to offer you a wider variety of homegrown cheeses. From Vermont, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Oregon, our many varieties of Cheddar will please the palate. And don’t forget the Vella Dry Jack from California–the taste is truly unique!

Grafton Vermont Sharp Cheddar

One of the finest American cheeses! All-natural, full-flavored Cheddar that’s great for snacking or melting over burgers.

Marieke Aged Gouda

Marieke is a smooth, creamy farmstead Gouda from Thorp, Wisconsin with a slightly sweet, nutty flavor that becomes more complex as it ages.

Laura Chenel Fresh Chèvre

A fresh cheese with mild flavor and soft, spreadable texture made in the traditional French elongated shape. Great for spreading on a slice of French baguette or crumbling in a salad, this is an American classic from Sonoma, California.

Maytag Blue

A great domestic cheese that is handmade in Iowa. This blue has a peppery, creamy, rich flavor.

Tillamook Cheddar

Award-winning cheese from Oregon. Medium-bodied and flavorful.

Carr Valley Apple Smoked Cheddar

This white Cheddar is apple smoked and hand rubbed with paprika. It has a light, smoky flavor that balances very well with the paprika. Produced by fourth-generation Wisconsin cheesemaker Sid Cook.
