The Glorious Food of France

The landscape of France is nearly as varied as ours, all in a space about the size of Texas. You can alpine ski in the east, take forest hikes in the middle, swim in blue sea waters in the south, and visit vineyards all over. And the food is even more varied and interesting. If you’ve ever had the opportunity to visit, you know what I mean. A single vacation there can ruin you for life. (Of course, mine are not vacations…they’re work, you know.) Every journey I’ve made yields great food experiences, each one hard-wired into my synapses. One of the first occasions was 13 years ago and my memory is still crystal clear. It was a late night at a friend’s house in Lyon, sampling every kind of goat cheese imaginable with a little crusty bread and Beaujolais, the air filled with the music of French conversation. Another time was a few years back while driving through Provence. I was at the wheel zigging and zagging like a good Frenchman, trying to follow my sister’s French map directions while simultaneously keeping my poor brother-in-law from getting car sick as we raced south toward the Côte d’Azur. But I kept my joie de vie all the while deftly munching on chunks of delectable nougat dur (famous candy made from almonds and egg whites) from Montelimar between shifting gears. And on the last trip, a new memory was logged as I dined on tender quail along with some of my DLM friends at the Royal Champagne Restaurant near Epernay before heading off to quaff Champagne in the cellars at Taittinger.

You would think by now I’d be getting jaded by having had so much good French food, but for me the obsession only gets stronger with each visit. How about you? Whether or not you’ve been to France, you can have your own French food experience right here. This is where Dorothy Lane Market steps up to the plate — the dinner plate, that is. By faithful reproduction (our Artisan baguettes, for example) or importation, DLM brings you and me the true flavors of France. We don’t have to be in Lyon to have a good mousse au chocolat. Neither do we need to visit Normandy for a creamy Camembert nor Dijon for the famous tangy mustard of the same name. All you have to do is visit DLM. Join us this month as we explore the foods and flavors of France. I promise you will love the journey.
