American Cheeses
America being the melting pot of the world, our cheeses are
an amalgam of other countries' cheeses as well. A few exceptions
to this rule occur with Jack cheese originating in California,
and Brick and Colby coming from Wisconsin. The U.S. is best
known, unfortunately, for our highly processed, plastic-wrapped
American cheese slices. Dorothy Lane Market is pleased to
offer you a wider variety of homegrown cheeses. From Vermont,
Iowa, Wisconsin, and Oregon many varieties of Cheddar will
please the palate. And don't forget the Vella Dry Jack from
California. The taste is unique!
"In 1802 a publicity-minded cheesemaker
delivered a 1235-pound wheel of cheese to President Thomas
Jefferson in Washington. Amazed citizens called it "the
big cheese," a phrase that has been used ever since to
describe someone of importance."
