Hot Roddin' Fruit Salad
1 cantaloupe or honeydew melon
1 cup seedless red or green grapes (or a mixture of both)
1/4 cup shredded coconut (optional)
1st Gear: Put the melon on a cutting board. With an adult’s help, slice 2 inches off the top and ½ inch off the bottom (the slice off the bottom will keep the melon from rolling away). From the top, scrape out the seeds with a metal spoon. Next, use a melon baller to make melon balls. Put melon balls in a bowl. Be careful not to cut through the melon’s rind while scooping out the balls.
2nd Gear: Take the 2-inch melon slice you cut, then cut out four circles with a 1½-inch round metal cookie cutter. Spear each “wheel” with a colorful toothpick and attach to the melon shell.
3rd Gear: Wash grapes thoroughly under running water. Place in the bowl, saving two for the car’s “headlights”. Use toothpicks to attach them to the shell.
4th Gear: Wash strawberries and “hull” them by removing the green tops. Place berries on a paper towel, then put another paper towel over them and pat dry. Place them in the bowl with the other fruit.
5th Gear: Peel the banana, then cut into slices on the cutting board. Place slices in the mixing bowl.
6th Gear: Almost to the finish line! Toss the shredded coconut, if desired, into the bowl of fruit. Mix gently with a wooden spoon. Spoon the fruit mixture into the car – and you’re off!
