October is American Cheese Month!

The American Cheese Society has made October American Cheese Month as a celebration and to raise awareness of North America’s delicious and diverse cheeses, and honor the farmers, cheesemakers, retailers, cheesemongers, and chefs who bring them to your table!

Rogue Creamery Smokey Blue

Always one of our absolute favorites, Rogue Creamery’s Smokey Blue is cold smoked for 16 hours over Northwestgrown hazelnut shells. The result is a balance of sweet caramel and hazelnut flavors.

Tumalo Farms Pondhopper

Flavio DeCastilhos and his wife Margie use traditional Dutch and Italian cheesemaking methods to produce unique goat cheeses at Tumalo Farms. The obvious hints of Cascade hops that wash over Pondhopper’s sharp flavor proves how successfully they’ve concocted a cheese using a local microbrew.This snow-white goat cheese has a yeasty aroma that brings out the soft nuttiness.

Cypress Grove Midnight Moon

Midnight Moon is a firm goat’s milk cheese that is aged for a minimum of one year. The flavor is buttery and a little nutty, with hints of caramel. A perfect table cheese that will also melt beautifully for the world’s best grilled cheese sandwich.

Cowgirl Creamery Mt. Tam

Mt. Tam is a smooth, creamy, elegant triple-cream — made with tasty organic milk from the Straus Family Dairy. Mt. Tam is firm, yet buttery, with a mellow, earthy flavor reminiscent of white mushrooms.

Fair Oaks Smoked Sweet Swiss

Smoked Sweet Swiss is a hickory-smoked Swiss that is creamy with just the right amount of smokiness. Fair Oaks, located in Indiana, has won numerous national blue ribbons and awards for superior taste and quality. Pair your cheese with some great wine!

Quivira 2011 Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel

Quivira Zinfandel is estate grown in the Dry Creek Valley of Sonoma, CA and made by winemaker Hugh Chappelle who we had the pleasure of chatting with last year at the winery. A classic American wine, this Zinfandel is organically farmed and while full of brambly, red berry fruit and spice, it remains quite plush and balanced. Perfect with a plate of charcuterie, spaghetti Bolognese, or grilled meats. $24

Cloudberry 2012 California Red Wine

Veteran Napa Valley winemaker Randy Mason, who makes one of our favorite Sauvignon Blancs under the Mason Cellars label, has created this delightful wine under the Cloudberry label. The inspiration for the wine was discovered in a striking, singular berry while Randy’s wife Megan and daughter Olivia Mason were fly fishing in Alaska. The grapes in this wine, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Petite Sirah, Zinfandel, and Malbec, are sourced and blended for their ability to mimic the Cloudberry tang. Flavorful, elegant, and affordable, it makes the perfect everyday dinner wine. $12
