Bensman Family Farms
On: June 01, 2012
One of the many benefits we have working at Dorothy Lane Market, besides eating great food, is getting to meet some great folks who share our passion for great eating. The Bensman Family Farm is just another great example of “knowing where your food comes from”. They have been raising local grass-fed beef for DLM for three years now.
Located in Historic Wayne Township, just outside of Waynesville, Ohio, this farm was purchased five years ago after a long journey to embark on farm living. Twenty-four of the farm’s 49 acres are devoted to prairie grass with the goal of re-establishing a population of Bobwhite Quail and Ringneck Pheasant. The remaining tillable ground is split between hay and pasture.
The Bensman family includes Tom and Christine and their three children, Paul, Joseph, and Caroline. In addition to grassfed beef, there are pigs, goats, donkeys, chickens, and a herd of cats which call the farm their home. The children help with the day-to-day operations as well as care for their 4-H livestock projects. By opting to raise their animals on a diet of grass, the Bensmans believe, with the support of local buyers, they can be profitable on a small scale. Renewable energy, animal stewardship, and preserving farmland are passions of Tom which have led this generation of Bensmans to continue long-rooted farming traditions.
