I love working with family farms. There is always a fascinating history of previous generations whom worked hard to follow their passions. Many times, they risked everything they had to provide for their family. In 1908, John “Pete” Naumes did just that when he left his job at the railroad and bought his first orchard in Oregon. Knowing very little about farming, he spent endless hours with his farming neighbors learning everything he could. Four generations later, his family has earned the reputation as one of the best pear growers in the world.

I traveled Rogue Valley, Oregon, to learn more about the Naumes family, their farm, and their famed Comice Pear—dubbed as The Holiday Pear. J.P. Naumes (named after his great grandfather) picked me up at the airport and we met up with his uncle Michael Naumes. Then we were off, visiting the family orchards.

After the orchard tour, we witnessed the grading and packing process for Comice Pears. They were packing pears that afternoon for our friends in Seattle at Metropolitan Market. Wow, the pears were beautiful! “This part of the grading is very difficult” Michael says “About 1 out of 20 pears will make this grade.” I explain to Michael and J.P. that this is exactly what DLM customers will want — the very best. For the first time, DLM will be offering this extremely exclusive Comice Pear from the Naumes family.

The Holiday Pears that you’ll find at DLM are guaranteed to be the sweetest, creamiest, most luscious pear that you’ve ever tried. They’ll only be available the month of December and will make an excellent gift for the foodie in your life. Be sure to ask for a sample when you are in the store and we hope you agree that they are true “Pearfection.”
