I come from a family of serious bakers and the standout family recipe in my mind has always been my mom’s pumpkin bars. No matter the time of year, I crave them all the same. Winter break home from college? Oppressive summer heat? Pumpkin bars.
It has taken me awhile, but after a couple of years of begging, I finally convinced the DLM bakers to test their hands at making them. For years they’d argue that we already had enough pumpkin goodness. But I say that you can never have enough pumpkin! This fall, my mom is off the hook, as we have my family’s recipe for pumpkin bars making its debut in our extensive pumpkin line-up. And we’re not stopping there with our celebration of all things pumpkin.
Some of the other stars include our very own Pumpkin Spice Latte, which is made with REAL pumpkin at our DLM Coffee Bar. You also can’t miss our Caramel Iced Pumpkin Cookie, Pumpkin Cheese Roll, Pumpkin Cream Cheese Crunch Coffee Cake, Spiced Pumpkin Bread with Cinnamon Streusel, and last but not least—Grandma Tobias Pumpkin Pie.
When I first started my career here nearly 13 years ago, I spied a metal tin recipe box on my boss’ desk with the recipe for our pie sticking out. Curiosity got the best of me and as I read it, my heart stopped as it was the same recipe that my own grandmother used, even down to the secret crust ingredient! I was so excited. How cool is it that someone can walk into a grocery store and purchase an authentic made-from-scratch recipe? The best part is that it’s already made for you.
This is why I must confess a secret that nobody knows (until now): I don’t bake my own pies at home any longer because I buy homemade pies here, and you can too (we won’t tell)! So let “Aunt Dorothy” do the baking this year. Flavors make memories and we’re more than happy to do the baking so you can spend more time with your loved ones instead of in the kitchen.
