Amish, Local Tomatoes

As the heat of summer intensifies, it can only mean one thing: supple local tomatoes. To me, a ripe, juicy tomato is the epitome of summer, as what’s yielded is a fruit that has the perfect balance of sweetness and acidity.

I couldn’t wait to meet Harvey Eicher and his family, who bring to us the very local tomatoes I’ve enjoyed for years at DLM. They coordinate with several Amish families who patiently work the land by hand and horse to grow these tomatoes. They bring local produce to Dorothy Lane Market a few times a week.

Harvey speaks kindly and softly, but with certainty of the quality of the produce—including those standout tomatoes—he brings to DLM. His wife, Amanda, tells me how all the Amish families they partner with are dedicated to raising the best crops. Taking my first bite of this summer’s bounty affirms just that.
