A Bite of Summer
On: June 30, 2015
You mention Ray Brentlinger’s corn and people go crazy. His corn is hands-down the best, and as the heat of summer rolls in, mouths start to water in anticipation. Take a bite, and it’s clear why so many embrace it: the kernels are plump and full of flavor.
The farm, located in New Carlisle, is on riverfront property lush with dark, rich soil. People often wonder how we get Ray’s corn in sooner than most, and it’s thanks to the bounty of the land. “That valley just produces the best corn,” says Dennis Chrisman, DLM’s VP of People and Produce.
When in season, we get freshly picked corn from Ray daily to each store. “Ray (a fifth-generation farmer)has been delivering corn to us for 30+ years,” Dennis says. And before that, Ray’s father supplied Dorothy Lane Market with corn, working side-by-side with DLM founder Calvin Mayne when we were a small fruit and vegetable market at the corner of Far Hills and Dorothy Lane. “We consider him a longtime friend ... He is a huge part of our summer local produce,” Dennis says.
Look for this summer treasure throughout the month at DLM. There are a number of ways to prepare it, whether you boil (three to four minutes), roast, or grill it wearing its husk. Don’t forget to dress it with Vermont Creamery Cultured Butter. Take a bite out of summer with Brentlinger’s Farm Market corn and enjoy!
