Connecting With The Local Amish Community

Dennis Chrisman, DLM’s VP of People and Produce, echoes the sentiment that supporting local is so much more than just carrying local produce ripe off of our neighboring lands—it’s forming lasting relationships with the people and communities behind those quality products. After all, we’ve always believed that good food brings people together.
Dennis sees this each time he makes the scenic drive to visit Harvey Eicher, a trip just across the Indiana border that takes a little bit over an hour. Harvey and his family coordinate with about six Amish families within a five-mile radius to bring together the best local produce. “They work extremely hard and are extremely proud of what they do,” Chrisman says of his most recent trip to the farms in May. “We make these trips to thank them.”
And these families take great pride in ensuring that they send their best to market at DLM, including their ripe and juicy tomatoes, squash, green peppers, green beans, melons, candy onions, and many more. When it comes to making the trek to visit these friends and see the produce they loving grow for us, “it’s not just business. Business is a result of the friendship,” Dennis says.
