Back in 1996 when Bakery Director Scott Fox came to DLM, our Cake department consisted of four ladies who worked in a 330-quare-foot room. As our Bakery business began to grow, so did our Cake department. (If you have ever enjoyed our signature buttercream frosting, you know why.) There seemed to be something missing though. At the time, we were purchasing a very high quality pre-made cake from an outside vendor. We started thinking, why don’t we just bake our own cakes? We started experimenting, and after a few months had a plan for space, ovens, and staffing.

In 2005 we opened Central Bakery. Initially, it was opened for the sole purpose of providing the Cake department with freshly baked cakes. Since then we have blown past capacity, baking so many yummy selections that we are out of space!

Back in the tiny room where the cakes were decorated we added more and more staff to accommodate the growing demand, eventually ramping up to 14 associates. And yes, they worked in the same 18x12 foot space in three different shifts. As you can imagine, even when they weren’t busy the decorators were like bumper cars in that little room. If someone was making a large wedding cake, it would take up a large part of the room and thus put a strangle hold on making pre-made “grab-and-go” cakes as well as filling customer’s orders. In early 2013, we knew we needed to make a change. We had to have a new facility.

Plans began, architectural drawings were made, and permits were filed for construction by spring. The next big decision was… what should our name be? We wanted the name of our new shop to encompass why people buy cake. Is it for a birthday, wedding, anniversary, or just because they love cakes? There it was, right in front of us — Love Cakes! We are proud to announce that we have moved to our new facility, which is a far cry from the previous space at 1,050 square feet.

At the helm of Love Cakes since 2012 is Manager Katherine Dean. A veteran of the Ohio National Guard, she is what we call “homegrown” as she began working for DLM in 2003 at the age of 15. She has worked bagging and stocking groceries, Bakery, Cheese Shop, and as Manager of Killer Brownie® Production. She works alongside a talented staff of decorators with a combined experience of 100 years, each of them happy to help you create the perfect cake.

Love Cakes is now open to the public, in the event that you would like to speak with one of our cake designers, or to save time if you are in hurry to whisk in and pick up your cake. Hours are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday. We are so excited to show you our brand new home, we would like to invite you to our Grand Opening and ribbon cutting event on Saturday, September 20 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 6255 Far Hills Ave. right behind DLM. See you there!
