“Thai” one on with our new option of basil

Most folks are starting to use up their home-grown basil during the last days of summer. Here at DLM, we have carried fresh basil for years. What I should say is that we carry sweet basil. The kind I think most of us are familiar with – wide, tender leaves with a delicate “green” flavor.

It’s hard to believe – but did you know there are over 100 varieties of basil out there?

New this week is our ongoing commitment to carry Thai basil at all 3 stores. Have you tried this stuff? I love using it in my home cooking because it has a crisp citrusy flavor that regular basil does not give. I think the flavor of Thai basil flavors is a good mixture of basil, mint, and citrus mixed all together in one herb. Others say it adds an herbal licorice flavor. Hands down – it is bolder and spicier than sweet basil.

It’s fabulous to use whenever you need that hit of fresh basil. Right now, I can’t get enough of it on our local heirloom tomatoes topped with creamy burrata cheese. Try it next time you need basil. I think you will love the different nuances this variety offers!

An Inexpensive Change of Seasons

Hen House Napkins Image

A color explosion is happening right now and it makes spring decorating fun and easy! Pinks, kiwi green, corals, and preppy navy blue pair perfectly with crisp white cotton to help give your kitchen and dining room a whole new look. Guest towels, napkins, dishtowels, and coasters are an affordable way to instantly freshen up your house.

Peggy and I picked up a couple new lines from the Atlanta gift show and can’t wait to show them off! Hen House is a new line for us – It’s a little preppy and pops with classic spring colors. Best of all, it’s just fun!

One Holiday Dinner I Am Not Cooking!

St. Patrick's Day Corned Beef Dinner

St. Patrick’s Day Corned Beef Dinner

Yes, I am Irish. Yes, I grew up in Chicago and even walked in the parade almost every year.  And yes, I have cooked plenty of corned beef dinners for St Patrick’s Day. But I don’t cook that dinner anymore. Why? Because our corned beef dinners are so good! The dinner comes packaged for 2 and is complete with steamed new potatoes with butter, salt, pepper, and fresh parsley – just like the kind I grew up with - and freshly steamed cabbage. It saves hours of work on my part, plus my whole house won’t smell like corned beef for an entire week! Nothing beats the long, slow, moist process of smoking.

Here at DLM, we slow smoke our delicious house-cured briskets and cook them for 5 hours. They are deep mahogany, crusted with spices, and delicious!  To finish the meal, I swing by the bakery and pick up our Irish Soda Bread, which is chockfull of currants, and 1 jar of clotted cream that I begrudgingly share with my family. Grab some Guinness and I am out the door. St Patrick’s Day dinner + DLM = DONE!

I’ll share a really good snack with you for if you happen to have any leftover Irish Soda Bread. Slice into ½-inch slabs and freeze. The next time you need a cup of tea, brew up a strong cup of Irish Breakfast Tea, toast or crisp up the slice in the oven, and slather with soft butter. It’s my perfect afternoon snack.

Fresh & Local Flavor

Come in and taste what our local farmers and DLM chefs can do! We’ve got everyone’s favorites back this season including a couple new recipes you just have to try!

New! Creamy Cucumber Dill Salad

I grew up with my mom making this salad all summer long. I love it ice cold, right out of the fridge. We are now making this fresh for my DLM family with local cucumbers, fresh dill, sour cream, and sweet onion. YUM!

Homegrown Tomato Salad

Only available for a short time! We pick the best local varieties of ripe tomatoes and lightly dress them with a citrus and herb vinaigrette.

Ed’s Fresh Corn Salad

Our best-selling summer salad is back using sweet local corn. We shuck each ear by hand every day and can barely keep up with the demand. I think it’s so popular because it just tastes like summer. Fresh, simple, and delicious!

BLPeach Sandwich

If you like BLT sandwiches, you’ve gotta try this one! I think it may be the perfect summer sandwich. Our delicious bacon, lush ripe peaches, and peppery arugula all slathered with basil mayo and piled on top of our toasted Farmhouse Bread.
